Homework - Brainstorm

I have looked at many different genres of films that are mostly recognised and I thought about what my target audience would like and also what is popular with my target audience. I have decided that western, crime, romance, documentary, and history aren't really popular within my target audience, but with older audiences so I have decided that these aren't the right options for my target audience. Through research I have found that comedy, horror and action are the most popular within my target audience, so I think that for my film it would be a good idea to stick to one of those genres as people are more likely to want to watch it then.

Homework - Target Audience

My target audience is teenagers and young adults aged between 15 - 25, who would fit within the D and E categories of the JICNAR scale.I think that my target audience is a mix of both men and women, but I think that the film would be more targeted towards men as this is the stereotypical  way films are targeted and marketed towards.

The people in groups D and E are going to be students or people who are in jobs where they don't earn much money, as they will be in education still. However some will have finished university and will fit into other groups as they will be earning a good amount of money. I think that my target audience are the most likely to go to the cinema because they like to keep up with what is popular and what everybody is talking about.

My secondary target audience will be people aged between 25 - 50 as many people older than my target audience also enjoy seeing new films and have a general interest in watching them. They will fit into the higher groups of the JICNAR scale as they will probably be in better paid jobs than students and young adults would be.

I'm going to ask random people who fit within my target audience questions about what they expect from a film trailer, and what they would want to see within a trailer. I am going to ask them questions such as:

- In a film trailer, would you want to find out who is the film?
- What would you personally like to be included in a trailer?
- What makes you want to go and see a film?
- What would make you not want to see a film?
- Should a trailer be exaggerated or should it show what you're actually going to see?

I think these are good questions as it will help me narrow down what people want to see, and also what they don't want to see.

These are the responses I got from my questionnaire:

Film Research - Avengers - Age of Ultron

Poster

Trailer

The trailer for Age of Ultron features many of the conventions that are associated with with a film trailer, such as showing the main characters, the basic overview of the plot, fast paced editing and general information about the film such as when it comes out, the rating and the social media associated with the film. The trailer starts with a pan of the city, this shows the audience that the film is based within that city and is a key location within the film, it then shows Ultron talking about The Avengers, stating that he wants them dead. This would make the audience want to see the film because they would want to know more about what the Avengers have done and the audience will also want to know what happens. The trailer then becomes fast paced, as this is a common convention with all action movies as it helps to show the audience what genre the film is. The soundtrack creates an eerie atmosphere to the trailer, and makes the audience want to see the film as the soundtrack draws them in.

Film Research - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Poster

Trailer

The trailer begins with showing us a clip from the film where the audience first sees professor snape walking through the classroom slamming the windows shut. This immediately makes the audience wonder why he is doing that, which makes them want to see the film. It then becomes more fast paced and shows a bus driving through London at a speed that isn't humanly possible, which hints at the type of film it is if you don't know about Harry Potter.
The trailer then goes on to show Sirius Black in prison, with a voiceover saying he's escaped from Azkaban, and that he's a murder. The audience then hears professor mcgonagall saying that he is the reason the potter family are dead. The title shows that the film is made by Warner Bros., who are a subsidiary of Time Warner. The trailer then continues to show different parts of the plot of the film to give the audience the idea of what is going to happen within the film and make the audience want to go and see the film. As Harry Potter is very popular most people would have been aware of the book series and also the other films that had been made before this point, so it would let existing fans know that a new film is coming out if they didn't know at that point.
The voice over includes dialogue that is said within the film to draw the audience in and make them want to watch it as it tells them more about the film than you would find out from just the scenes from the film being shown. It also has intertitles which tell you even more about it.
The music used within the trailer is very fast paced and dramatic, but then slows down as the trailer goes deeper into the plot, then towards the end becomes more lifted and the classic Harry Potter music that everyone recognises. They do this so that is shows that whilst the film is very dramatic and serious it also ha funny parts within it. They use the Harry Potter music that people recognise because it makes the audience recognise the series.
The trailer also uses many different types of shots, such as tracking shots, close ups, high angles and low angles and also over the shoulder shots.
The trailer is edited so that is shows parts of the film from the beginning, middle and end. This way it draws the audience in and makes them want to see what also happens.
